Eskom is the state-owned South African public utility responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribution of approximately 86% of the country’s electricity. It has faced significant challenges, including financial difficulties and frequent power cuts (load shedding), but has recently reported improved performance and profits. Eskom operates a diverse portfolio of power stations, including coal-fired plants (the backbone of its generation), nuclear, hydro, pumped storage, and gas turbines. It is also investing in renewable energy projects like wind and solar power. Eskom is working on unbundling the utility into three separate national entities (Generation, Transmission, and Distribution) to enhance efficiency and transparency. The National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA) has already been approved to operate.
