The municipal seat is the town of Lephalale, previously known as Ellisras. Lephalale is a significant national development node for mining and energy generation, often referred to as the “heartbeat of the Waterberg Bushveld”. The Waterberg coalfield, which surrounds the town, contains an estimated 40-50% of South Africa’s remaining coal reserves.
